Julia Roberts Believes in Clean Cook Stoves, as Does the United Nations. And Angelica. We Can Gift Them for Christmas Thanks to the Highland Support Project.
Clean Cook Stoves for Christmas
Stoves are Important
Globally, 2 million deaths every year are caused by smoke inhalation from open, domestic fires within the walls of a family home. Of these, 44% are cases of childhood pneumonia which, along with lung cancer and COPD, are caused by soot particles penetrating deep into the lungs. With a higher annual death rate than malaria, the UN has identified clean cook stoves as a vital development priority.
Clean cook stoves do not simply save lives, they change them completely. The efficient use of firewood reduces deforestation and risks of landslides - a big danger in Guatemala, where communities, including long time AMA partner community Santa Catarina in 2005, have had to completely relocate after the devastation. Stoves also reduce the amount of time spent by women gathering firewood, tending the fire, and cooking, saving an estimated 3-4 hours of a woman's day.
This extra time allows women the opportunity to participate in communal activities, workshops teaching artisan skills or community health and well-being, and business ventures such as selling their woven products. They are able to gain self-esteem, independence, and their own income.

Angelica's Story
With the help from our supporters we have been installing clean cook stoves in the homes of women participating in our women circles for over 20 years. With every stove, we all have become part of a heart-warming story. Each story is different, but each equally as special. These stories are of empowerment, pride, regaining self-worth, and greater available time. With this time women are able to participate more in our women circle activities, giving them the chance to do more for themselves and families.
This is Angelica's story.
Angelica is recently married and a new mother! She has grown up in a community in which an in-home open fire was the only means for cooking. This past summer Angelica partnered with a service learning team to install a clean cook stove in her house- she found the changes in her life remarkable. She finds that the best thing her stove has done for her is protect her child from breathing in smoke as she cooks with him on her back. "My eyes are not always burning now and my baby's nose isn't black all the time from breathing in the smoke."
Angelica has also noticed she spends less time cooking, allowing her to focus more on her son and her marriage. She has also managed to expand her business with the use of her new stove saying, "My new stove has my made everything simpler. I make chocolate in my home and it is so much easier to make on an AMA stove. I am so grateful for what I have been given." With Angelica's business taking off, she is helping to support her family. Her and her family's lives have been transformed by the benefits of the clean cook stove.
